Walls of Tomorrow, Today

Hands-On Training for Energy Step Code 4 and Beyond
3-Day Course | 20 CPD Credits
BIR Centre for Excellence, Port Coquitlam BC
Picture
This is our brand new Hands-On Training for 2021. No prior hands-on training required and all new learning for our students that have enjoyed any of our 10' Wall Challenge, Windows & Doors, or Windows and Details. There are no tests, there is an opportunity to contribute to the construction for any student, but this practical learning opportunity is intended to be a low stress opportunity to learn about some of the above wall building envelope systems that will be the basis of all new homes built in BC under the upper levels of the BC Energy Step Code.

Course Dates

In this session, students have and opportunity to observe and/or to participate in the construction of 100 square feet of Part 9 residential walls above grade including details at:
  • Windows
  • Doors
  • Alcoves
  • Shed roof/gable transitions • Hose bibs
  • Dryer vents
  • Ledger connected decks/landings • Electrical penetrations, and
  • Inside and outside corners.
The two separate wall samples built in each class will be Step 4+ performance assemblies including particular design and construction requirements for:
  • Air tightness
  • Water penetration control
  • Vapour diffusion control, and • Thermal separation.

Wall #1:
The "Perfect Wall" approach with complete exterior insulation places all of the principal insulation to the exterior of the wall sheathing. This wall will be partially pre-assembled in 4 sections with @ pound medium density closed cell polyurethane foam insulation, multi-layered rigid mineral fibre panels, Multi layered Extruded Polystyrene Foam (XPS) insulation panels, and the forth section (to be completed by the students) will utilize alternating layers of Expanded Polystyrene Foam (EPS) Insulation.

Wall #2:
The "Fat Wall" approach involves the placement of all of the insulation within the framing space (just much more of it than in the past). This wall will clearly demonstrate double 2 x 4 structural framing techniques. This wall will also be partially pre- assembled to show examples of Dense blown cellulose fibre insulation, Flash-and-Fill with 2 pound, closed cell polyurethane foam insulation and blown cellulose fibre, and Flash-and-Fill with 1/2 pound, open cell polyurethane foam insulation and blown cellulose fibre. Particular attention will be focused on matching appropriate barrier technologies to each of the systems with explanations on the importance of considering the overall performance of a chosen assembly when selecting the specific construction and material requirements for each unique approach.
