The Release of Step Code 3 Mandatory Training:

On September 23, 2022, Public Review of the proposed changes to the BC Building Code was released and the anticipated significant changes are expected to be signed into effect by the Minister as early as December of 2022 . If adopted, these changes will require new homes in British Columbia to be built in conformance with Energy Code Step 3. In acknowledgement of these proposed changes, Building It Right has elected to revise our 8 modules of the Energy Code Step 3 training.
Revised versions of Modules 1- 8 are now available.

CPD Program Update - July 11, 2022

BC housing as introduced a new condition for general contract license renewal, primarily stipulating a 2-year period to demonstrate competency in building to Step 3 of the BC Energy Step Code. This will come into effect for licenses being renewed with licenses expiring Sept. 30, 2022 onwards. Note there may be exemptions for those already building to a Step 3 level, and/or who have already completed relevant training.

To ensure builders are prepared to build to Step 3 of the BC Energy Step Code, this training will be comprised of 8 modules including:
  • BC Energy Step Code Overview and Requirements
  • Meeting the BC Energy Step Code by Design
  • Building Science for the BC Energy Step Code
  • Building Envelope Options for the BC Energy Step Code
  • Air Barriers for the BC Energy Step Code
  • Mechanical Systems for the BC Energy Step Code
  • Building Envelope Quality Assurance and Quality Control
  • BC Energy Step Code Project Management

We’ve got you covered!

Building It Right has been working closely with BC Housing since 2021 to ensure that we have everything that BC Builders require to comply with this new requirement. Here are three tools that Building It Right are finalizing to streamline the process:
  1. Building It Right have compiled 8 modules (each 2 1/2 hours long) that are already pre-approved for CPD credits. These courses are undergoing final independent verification for conformance with the 8 required BC Housing Modules. This review will be completed this week and we have been assured that we will receive official pre-approval for the new requirements shortly thereafter.
  2. If you have taken any Building It Right courses or training in the past, you will be receiving a custom notice from us telling you which Modules that you already have credit for. For many of our clients, you may have already completed most or all of the required Modules in the past and this new Licensing provision may already be satisfied. We will have these notices completed soon after we receive the results of our review by BC Housing.
  3. For all new and existing clients of Building It Right, we will guide you through your Continuing Professional Development requirements and Energy Code Step 3 mandatory training with Industry Leading learning options. Our web site will clearly identify which of the 8 modules will be credited with any of our extensive curriculum and we will have each of the 8 Modules (2 1/2 hours each) offered to top up any Modules not covered by previous learning through us or any other recognized provider. As always, our friendly and knowledgeable staff are here at 604.464.0596 or toll free at 1.844.464.5663 to answer any questions and to guide you through your choices.

CPD Program Update - March 6, 2019

Yesterday on March 6, 2019, as part of “Better Regulations for British Columbians 2019”, the B.C. Government announced significant changes to the Homeowner Protection Act regulations as a means to simplify and streamline the process for the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program.

So what are the key highlights? As of July 1, 2019, "Active practice category for 20 points of CPD is removed" and thus "20 CPD points are required instead of 40". This means the remaining 20 Points required for CPD must be obtained through education.

BC Housing also states that "Nominees may be able to carry up to 20 extra earned CPD training points over from one licence term to the next" and "You no longer have to take a majority of CPD points in a particular category (known as “category A” in the current regulation)". You can carry up 20 extra CPD Points into future licensing years. If you take a more intensive course such as our 10 Foot Wall Challenge for 21 points, and then you see a course in the same licensing year that really appeals to you (such as a code change course or highlights of the new earthquake design requirements) you can take it and bank the extra points beyond the 20 CPD points required for the year (up to a maximum of 20 additional points in that year). You can carry these over into future years but the designate who earned them must remain the designate and the total banked points can never exceed 20 in any licensing year.

To see how the CPD carryover can work, view the table below:

Murray's Initial Formatting of ICF Series Outline:

Session 1:
ICF Below Grade
This session leads off with an overview of a generic ICF block Insulating Concrete Form (ICF) system including Part 9 reinforcement, concrete placement and transition and penetration detailing.  The requirements relating to footing design and construction, damp proofing and waterproofing, reinforcement, openings for pipes, electrical, basement windows and doors, as well as transition details to various walls above grade (including ICF), ledger attachments, and concrete placement/consolidation will be examined in detail.  Advanced CGI graphics, photo’s and video will help to explain the basics of ICF in below grade applications.  Tips, tricks and qualify assurance information will also be presented.
Session 2:  ICF Above Grade
ICF has always been an option from footing to the roof line, and more industry designers and builders are exploring the use of ICF as more than just a high performance, durable basement or crawlspace option.  In this session, an overview of the same generic ICF block used to form above below grade walls will be explored.  The unique requirements for reinforcement above grade, and penetration detailing including alternate methods of integrating windows, doors, plumbing and electrical elements through the massive wall assembly that is ICF. The session will be include supporting graphics, photo’s and video to ensure clarity of the steps required to produce highly durable, energy efficient and cost effective homes with these products.
Session 3: The Energy Advantage of ICF
Once upon a time, an R value was an R value.  It was a measure of the thermal resistance of an insulating material or layer.  When our walls were effective R 2 (2 x 4 with no insulation), or R 4 (when we filled those walls with sawdust and other interesting materials) or R 8 (with 2 x 4 batt) and then R 16 (2 x 6 walls with batt), the effective insulating value of the entire wall assembly was reasonably close to the value of the insulation that we used to improve that performance.  This session explains how energy performance must now be evaluated as we move towards Net Zero homes by 2032, and how the actual thermal performance of ICF has always been significantly greater than the nominal R value of the polystyrene ICF forms themselves.  Thermal massing, effective insulation values and many other mysteries will be clearly and simply explained.  This will also provide the tools to understand why ICF has always delivered much higher thermal performance and high lateral load resistance but is only now getting the credit it deserves under the recent evolution of building codes in Canada.
Session 4: The Continuity of the Enclosure With ICF
The house as a whole, or system, is the new language of designers and builders.  With advanced energy efficiency comes the need for a finely balanced approach to every choice; from fenestration, to mechanical, to thermal layers, and the continuity of the planes of protection.  ICF is a robust and highly durable building system and can be more forgiving when exposed to excessive environmental loads, but too much of anything one element can quickly have a very negative effect on affordability and even performance.  This session will dive into continuity of the planes of protection and discuss balanced approaches to the whole house design.  This will highlight some very interesting and somewhat unexpected changes in how we design and built these homes.
Session 5: Manufacturers Options Below Grade
The session will present an introduction to a cross-section of specific available manufacturers proprietary systems and industry support resources for the new and veteran user of ICF for below grade walls.  An examination of the specific manufacturers requirements, accessories, and particular methods to ensure that the installation of specific systems conforms with the requirements outlined in Part 9.  This session goes further to explore expanded capabilities when using specific ICF blocks with the assistance of professional design and oversight.
Session 6: Manufacturers Options Above Grade
The session will be rounded out with an introduction to a cross-section of specific available manufacturers proprietary systems and industry support resources for the new and veteran user of ICF for above grade walls.  An examination of the specific manufacturers requirements, accessories, and particular methods to ensure that the installation of specific systems conforms with the requirements outlined in Part 9.  This session goes further to explore expanded capabilities when using specific manufacturers' ICF blocks with the assistance of professional design and oversight.

Course in a Box is a hybrid method of learning using many different methods of education for a particular course including flipped classroom, projects, online, live webinar, and help desk.

The purpose of Course in a Box is to:
  • Allow builders the opportunity to complete hands on course from remote locations or to complete on their own time without the structured scheduling required of a live workshop
  • Provide feedback (testing) of completed projects in a controlled environment on what would normally be just a deliverable to a homeowner without real follow up or testing
  • Allow builder to understand the concepts and reasons behind different construction methods and why they are important to include in design and practical application in an environment of quality, longevity, efficiency requirement by both regulation and client demands.
