Step Code 3 Mandatory Training and Report Cards:

If you are an existing client of Building It Right, you should have received a Report Card summarizing your Credits (if any) for the Mandatory Step Code Training. This report card represents months of work with BC Housing and RDH Building Engineering who reviewed our breakdown of our previous courses for delivery time and learning objectives that aligned with the new, Mandatory Training requirements for advanced Step Code requirements as part of the Builder Licensing provisions in BC.
Building It Right are the only education provider that offers this prior learning recognition.

There are a couple of important points to consider:

The report cards summarize 3 important elements for each of the 8 required learning modules of the Mandatory Step Code Training.
a. The Total Time and the Learning Objectives are provided for BC Housing to assess the cumulative prior learning of the licensee.
b. The Credit/No Credit is where the Licensed Builder and BC Housing can determine which modules have been deemed completed through prior Building It Right learning (Credit) or that still require completion by the Licensed Builder (No Credit).
The report card is a ONE TIME offering. Report cards will not be re-run to reflect any future learning through Building It Right. Modules 1 through 8 are available as stand alone offerings through Building It Right and these Modules all count for CPD credit as well as for Mandatory Step Code training.

Example:
Your report card confirms that you have achieved Credit for modules 1, 2, 3, and 6 of the Mandatory Step Code training. Congratulations! Your previous learning through Building It Right has already got you part way through the new Builder Licensing requirements. To complete your training, you can now sign up for and complete Step 3 Mandatory Training (https://buildingitright.com/step3online.html) for the modules that you still require (4, 5, 7, & 8). This will complete the required 8 modules and you will receive 2.5 CPD credits for each module that you complete (10 CPD Credits in this example). A second option is to take all 8 of the Modules and complete the Mandatory Step Code training and receive the full 20 CPD credits! BC Housing has confirmed that all of these Modules are pre-approved for new CPD Credits despite the Credits granted on your report card.

The Release of Step Code 3 Mandatory Training:

On September 23, 2022, Public Review of the proposed changes to the BC Building Code was released and the anticipated significant changes are expected to be signed into effect by the Minister as early as December of 2022 . If adopted, these changes will require new homes in British Columbia to be built in conformance with Energy Code Step 3. In acknowledgement of these proposed changes, Building It Right has elected to revise our 8 modules of the Energy Code Step 3 training.
Revised versions of Modules 1- 8 are now available.

New Step Code Requirements

Starting October 1, 2022, builders must complete 20 CPD credits over the next two years that satisfy 8 specific modules (2.5 hours each) of Step Code 3 training of the BC Energy Step Code.

These modules can also be used as part of their 20 CPD hours of training per year to keep their license valid (this requirement remains exactly as it has been since 2016).

Many of our previous courses count for credits towards some of these 8 modules. These will be provided to all of our clients in a report card from us, coming in the next couple of weeks. This report will outline, what courses each client has credit for with Building It Right, and which of the 8 modules they still must complete.

We have been approved for a new series that is completely interchangeable and qualifies exactly the same as the 8 Module course that BC Housing has produced:

Module 1: BC Energy Step Code Overview and Requirements
Module 2: Meeting the BC Energy Step Code by Design
Module 3: Building Science for the BC Energy Step Code
Module 4: Building Envelope Options for the BC Energy Step Code
Module 5: Air Barriers for the BC Energy Step Code
Module 6: Mechanical Systems for the BC Energy Step Code
Module 7: Building Envelope Quality Assurance and Quality Control
Module 8: BC Energy Step Code Project Management

Once they've received their report card, they can sign up for the outstanding Modules from us, which (if completed in the next two years) give them their mandatory Step 3 requirement. They also get CPD credits for these Modules (2.5 CPD each) which they can use as per of their 20 renewals points per year that they must also still complete as normal.

Please note that other education providers may have some make-up courses, and BC Housing is also offering the 8 Modules.

Many of our clients will already be half done, and we are working on even more of our past courses covering other modules. We will have final direction before October 1.
