Hands-on Builder Training

The team at Building It Right have been busy for the past 6 months developing the next in our series of what we believe are the most practical training sessions for builders available today. The overwhelming success of our Hands-On Training courses delivered in our Centre for Excellence in Port Coquitlam has driven us to develop a brand new, first level detailing course. This new Hands-On Training explores the Building Science of various, high performance wall assemblies and provides step-by-step instructions on how to detail several of the most common building envelope details in full Code Conformance & Industry Vetting. If you have not done training in our Port Coquitlam facility, then this is the perfect first course.

What You Get

Windows and Details is a 20-hour, hands-on builder course that combines high level building science explanations of the requirements for successful building enclosure design and construction woven into 2 days of Instructor-led wall detailing construction into small, prefabricated high performance wall blanks. Students install their choice of window, dryer vent hood, hose bib and electrical penetration into their choice of high-performance wood frame wall (narrow stud/wide stud/double stud/exterior insulation). The wall segment will be completed by the student including air barrier, vapour barrier, cladding, sheathing membrane and exterior finishes any exterior insulation required for the chosen system. At the end of the second day, finished walls are given at least an overnight cure prior to testing. Day 3 testing has the window blanks from several students placed 2 at a time into our test rig and air leakage is first examined and then a full ASTM e1105 Wind Driven Rain test is applied at progressively increasing air pressure differentials until the sample either exceeds the highest test rating or it fails. The use of UV fluorescing dye in the test water aids in identifying even the smallest leaks as well as provides easily interpreted stating patterns for water ingress paths that can be identified as the assembly is disassembled after testing.

In short, the student learns about how high performance walls can be designed and built with low risk to the structure, understands the key building science concepts for each element in the build, and confirms the performance of the final assembly. These also form the building blocks for further training in our facility such as the 10’ wall challenge.

Have it Your Way: Same Course, Two Delivery Methods

1. At our Centre for Excellence in Construction, located in Port Coquitlam over 2 1/2 Days There is no better learning environment than at our Centre for Excellence in Construction in Port Coquitlam. The availability of most materials used in home construction along with the most current industry tools make this a rich learning environment and exposure to library assemblies scattered throughout the location make it truly a world class training experience.

2. Order our Course In A Box, completed in your own facility over 2 1/2 days You can now order our course in-a-box shipped directly to your facility. All of the materials and assemblies required to complete the wall blank are included in this kit shipped in a re-usable crate and return freight pre-paid. You just need to supply the hand tools necessary for home construction. Elements are pre-fabricated, pre-cut and pre-assembled where appropriate so that you spend time learning and not wasting time on simple tasks. Your instructions are in the form of online presentations that combine simple to understand Building Science principles as they relate to your details and step-by-step instructions on putting your choice of wall blank and components together into a high performance energy efficient Code conforming assembly ready for return shipping to our facility. Testing will be offered regularly along with groups of other student projects and once booked, the 4 hour session will be broadcast On-Line interactively with all of the participating students where successes and challenges will be identified and discussed. The assembly and learning portions happen over roughly 2 full working days at your own facility and the final live testing review happens on a pre-arranged day and time over a four hour, On-Line session.

Why Hands-On?

There are builders throughout BC and Canada that are taking advantage of the quality of learning that comes from hands on the tools approaches. To experience the building of complex construction details and then to see them tested to the extreme forces of nature changes builders’ minds about what is important, what needs to be prioritized, and most importantly we are told that the hands on type of training breaks down the barriers standing in the way of the complex changes in design and construction for higher energy performance demands under our new and evolving Building Codes.

Syllabus

Day 1: Students will be physically installing a window blank, a dryer vent, a hose bib, and an electrical penetration following a classroom based introduction to window and detail installations as described under Part 9 of the BC Building Code and in accordance with the soon to be released “Revised Building Envelope Detailing Guide for Houses” all vetted by APEGBC, AIBC, ASTTBC, BC Housing, City of Vancouver, Canadian Wood Council and the Province of BC. There will also be instruction on sealants, joint profiling, backer rods, bond breakers, and material compatibility for windows and doors. 8 hours.

Day 2: The day will start with a classroom lecture reviewing various testing methods of window and door installations for rain water penetration, structural and air leakage. The rest of the day is a continuation of the hands on training and installation the window and other penetration details. 8 Hours.

Day 3: The final half day will be devoted to testing and performance review of previously installed wall assemblies and a performance review of each tested assembly with all participating students. 4 Hours.
